Governor's Disaster Declaration Declared August 11, 2023 Due to Extreme Fire Danger

/DocumentCenter/View/3969/Burn-Ban-Order-Implemented-July-18-2023Governor Abbott issued a Disaster Declaration for Texas on August 11, 2023 due to extreme drought conditions and high fire risk throughout the state of Texas.   On a local level, Taylor County issued a burn ban on July 18, 2023 for the next 90 days or until substantial rainfall has presented itself.

Taylor County encourages all citizens to take extreme caution during these extreme heat warnings and triple digit temperatures and stay hydrated.  Make sure all livestock, horses, and domestic animals have plenty of water and as much shade as possible, and please refrain from any outdoor burning activities.

On August 18, 2023, a large grass fire started in the vicinity of county road 150 off Highway 83/84 in Potosi.  This fire identified as the Hilltop Fire burned 200 acres and as of August 20, 2023 is 85% contained.  We owe a great gratitude for the mutual aid to Potosi Fire Department  with surrounding Volunteer Fire Departments, Taylor County personnel, Texas Forest Service, Abilene Fire Department,  Emergency Management and Taylor County Sheriff's Office quickly responding on scene to suppress this fire.   Currently all needs have been met.
